Shannon Airport
- This transatlantic airport, which caters to holiday-makers, business-people, and air cargo, also has a sustained history of foreign military use.
- In 1945, the first scheduled flight from the United States landed in Shannon Airport. In 1947, Shannon Airport became the first duty-free airport in the world and established Shannon as an international industrial and distribution centre, stimulating further traffic growth.
- Originally designed by architect JJ Ruddle, the terminal has since expanded, winning ‘Best Commercial Building’ in the 2002 Irish Architecture Awards for a new terminal designed by Murray O'Laoire Architects.
- Murray O’Laoire Architects were one of Ireland’s most prolific architectural studios during the 1990s and 2000s, designing buildings such as Terminal One at Dublin Airport and CIT Cork School of Music. The studio was formed in 1979 by Sean O’Laoire and Hugh Murray, who was chair of EVA for more than 30 years.
- This site was one of 12 listed venues for the 20th edition of EVA in 1996, curated by Guy Tortosa (b. 1961, France).
- Martin Parr (b. 1952, UK) presented a series of colour photographs taken in the airport’s duty-free shop.
