Slattery’s Lamps – sediments of a mind

This light installation involved the gathering of information from inside Slattery’s Bar, which was then transmitted through a street lamp outside.

The single-channel video showed footage gathered by three specially trained peregrine falcons introduced into Moyross in 2008. The free flights of the endangered birds recorded the complexity of a place on the verge of disappearance due to the failed agendas of urban planning.

Myles Street

The CatDig was a cultural exploration of Catherine Street, one of Limerick’s oldest streets. It included the CatDig weekend, a collective art event based on links between the street’s traders and creative practitioners.

Arthur’s Quay Park

This outdoor installation created various contradictions by using a device associated with private settings in a public space. The Hunt Museum collection was originally a personal and private one, making this an appropriate venue for an exploration of the domestic in public.

An outdoor mixed-media installation in which the artist lived inside a small shed between recycling bins, and used the refuse that was thrown away to make small sculptures and artist’s books.

Potato Market

This audio work was produced following a period of residency in Limerick city. Taking the section of the river known as the Curragower Falls as its main subject, the work uses tidal charts and fantasy fiction to create a forecast of the river that has run dry, predicting both bureaucratic and folkloric consequences for Limerick.

Merchant’s Quay 

A mixed-media installation that reflects on a period in the 1980s when there were council houses within the St John’s Castle grounds. The artist constructed a ruin, with domestic belongings and appliances embedded in its brick walls. A large recuperated window was engraved with images and quotes relating to the Irish famine and politics.

King John’s Castle

The audio work consisted of two notes sung by the artist, played in intermittent bursts through the course of the day. The higher note played through a speaker situated at the upper floor stairway, while the lower note played through a speaker at ground level.

The Granary

The project asked artists to take two geometric shapes as starting points, considering the ‘square’ as a central meeting point, the site of social exchange and civic or political gathering, as well as a site for the display and exchange of produce, artefacts and effects, and a ‘circle’ as a kind of uncertain or preparatory gathering for these occasions. The event included live performances, sculptural works and film.

The artists invited four John’s Square residents, from a variety of professions, to come together and participate in a photoshoot. The photographic portraits were placed in a series of lightboxes, which were specially made to fit into the curved alcoves of the square.

Site-responsive artworks can take many forms – sculpture, installation, performance, and more – but all share the characteristic of uniquely engaging with the location and environment of the work’s presentation. 

There have been numerous site-responsive artworks in EVA’s history, but listed here are some of the most memorable. The locations include derelict buildings, busy pubs, institutional venues, and public spaces. The corresponding artworks were all temporary and are no longer on view, but serve as examples of how the city has been a catalyst for artistic inspiration and critique.
