Thomond Park is a rugby stadium, home to teams including Munster Rugby, Shannon RFC and UL Bohemian RFC.
The stadium opened in 1934 and was nicknamed ‘Pneumonia Park’ due to its exposure to the cold and wet. It was redeveloped in 2008 by Murray O’Laoire Architects.
Murray O’Laoire Architects were one of Ireland’s most prolific architectural studios during the 1990s and 2000s, designing buildings such as Terminal One at Dublin Airport and CIT Cork School of Music. The studio was formed in 1979 by Sean O’Laoire and Hugh Murray, who was chair of EVA for more than 30 years.
This site was one of 14 venues for the 34th edition of EVA in 2010, curated by Elizabeth Hatz (b. 1953, Sweden) and titled matters.
Here Matthew Beattie (b. 1971, Canada) presented a series of drawings titled Wrongness (2010) across this and two other venues – Irish Chamber Orchestra Studio and Thomas Street Centre. The works were details of architectural imperfections based on photographs of each of the buildings, taken shortly after construction of the sites was completed.
